Neighborhood Technology Training Program

Make a secure online donation to YouthBuild Boston
Computer Lab

Our goal in the Neighborhood Technology Training Program (NTTP) is to bridge a technology gap between low-income households and the rest of society. NTTP refurbishes used computers and offers them to individuals, families, and community organizations for an affordable cost. The refurbishing process also teaches computer repair skills to teens.

NTTP maintains all computers in YouthBuild Boston's computer lab, which is used by students in the Construction Training Program and Project Advantage. All graduates of the Construction Training Program and Project Advantage receive a computer upon successful completion of all components of their program.

Computer sales
We always have computers in stock for sale, though the model and specifications will vary, depending on the nature of donations we receive. All computers come with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and are high-speed Internet ready.

"Since I bought my computer, my children have been doing much more homework. It's the best investment I ever made."
— Sonia Lopez, Customer

Equipment donations
NTTP is fueled by donations of Windows-based computer hardware. If you would like to donate equipment, please CLICK HERE.

Computer repair training
We typically take on young people, ages 14-19 for our computer repair training. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact Steve Whitney: swhitney@ybboston.org or 617.445.8887 x18.

Program History and Technology Collaborations
In 1999 we worked with the former East-West Foundation to provide 300 computers to middle school students in Boston. Shortly thereafter, when the Foundation closed its doors, YouthBuild Boston assumed responsibility for fulfilling technology needs in the community and NTTP was born. We have a seat on the advisory board of the Uphams Corner Computer Collaborative, a member of The City of Boston's Technology Goes Home program. In the summer of 2001, in conjunction with MIT's Center for Reflective Practices, we hired several local youth to conduct a survey of area non-profits to create a benchmark of the level of technology in the Dudley Empowerment Zone. From those results we met with a number of the survey participants to explore ideas such as sharing costs to hire a IT person that would rotate among the agencies or sharing an internet connection.
